PEKiP – The Prague Parent-Child Program
The Prague-Parent-Child-Program (PEKiP) is a unique initiative designed to support parents and their babies in the crucial first year of life. Originating from the research of Czech psychologist Dr. Jaroslav Koch in the 1970s, PEKiP was further developed in 1973 by Prof. Dr. Christa Ruppelt and Prof. Dr. Hans Ruppelt, along with their colleagues. Their goal was to create a scientifically backed, socially inclusive group program that strengthens the bond between parents and their infants through guided play and movement activities.
What Happens in a PEKiP Group?
At the heart of PEKiP are play and movement activities, introduced to parents by a certified instructor. The key principles of PEKiP sessions include:
Baby-Led Play & Exploration
Activities are adapted to the baby’s abilities and needs. The baby sets the pace, creating a natural and enjoyable learning experience.
Strengthening Parent-Child Interaction
Through shared play, movement, and joy, PEKiP fosters a strong and responsive bond between parents and their babies. It helps parents understand and support their child’s development.
Social Learning & Parental Exchange
Babies interact with other infants, developing early social skills. Parents discuss everyday parenting topics, gaining valuable guidance and support.
A Supportive Community for Families
PEKiP brings together families from different backgrounds, providing a network of support. Parents share experiences, build friendships, and gain confidence in their parenting journey.
The Structure of PEKiP Sessions
A typical PEKiP group consists of up to eight parents and their babies, all of a similar age. Sessions take place in a warm room, allowing babies to move freely without restrictive clothing. A trained instructor leads the group, introducing activities that align with the developmental stages of the infants.
The sessions encourage:
✅ Motor skill development through guided play
✅ Sensory exploration in a safe environment
✅ Parental bonding through shared experiences
✅ Early socialization for infants
Mooshie Wooshie and PEKiP: A Perfect Pair for Infant Development
Both Mooshie Wooshie and PEKiP are scientifically rooted in fostering early childhood development. While PEKiP promotes motor skills and bonding through movement-based play, Mooshie Wooshie’s high-contrast designs enhance visual and cognitive growth. Integrating Mooshie Wooshie into PEKiP sessions adds an extra layer of sensory engagement, making playtime more interactive and enhancing focus during parent-baby activities. Together, these approaches create a well-rounded developmental experience that nurtures a baby’s growing mind and body.
